Art for Kids, Project Somos, Week 1

Hi, Everyone!

Welcome to our new blog! We'll keep you updated on our time here in Guatemala at Project Somos and our day-to-day experiences and of course the art classes with the children.

And, as the Spirit moves you, we welcome all donations for the art supplies needed for the 60+ kids that attend school with us. All donations go to art supplies. Sam & I look after our own needs. The school year here in Guate is from January to November. Sam & I started on January 13th, the first day of school. Our classes are 45 minutes with either the "Littles" (preschoolers) or primary grade students, usually one morning class and one afternoon class.

These are kids that for the most part, haven't gone to school before, haven't experienced art and haven't played in a playground before either. Project Somos wants to give these kids the best experience possible and works hard at creating an atmosphere of love and support in order that the kids look forward to each school day.

You'll notice how colourful each building is, inside and out. Much thought went in to create an atmosphere to engage the kids.

Each morning Sam & I start our day at 8am with the Littles. We talk to them in English. Sam likes to get books of colours, animals and numbers and teach these words to them in English while they eat a snack. Most likely come to school without having eaten breakfast. Usually all of their snacks disappear quickly. After snacks they have a half hour playtime. You will usually find Sam & I with one group of kids or another in the playground. The girls especially love the tire swings and will pile 4 or 5 on and squeal in delight as they spin around and bump into the posts. Sam also joins in the soccer games going on.

Art for Kids, Project Somos, Week 4 & 5

In art class the older kids have completed a colour wheel and the gray scale. They quickly figured out how to mix orange, green and purple. They have had one class of using the gray scale to see light and shadow.

The older kids are learning the colour wheel in art class. So far we’ve mixed yellow and blue, and yellow and red. This week we’ll conclude with red and blue and also get them to create a colour wheel for themselves.

One Little had no idea what to do with paper and crayons the first week. She would make a few marks and then fold and crumple her paper. But the second week she drew, well, scribbled, on the paper and used many colours.
