Art for Kids, Project Somos, Week 4 & 5

Weeks 4 & 5

 Today is Tuesday, February 19. Sam & I have been here at Project Somos for five weeks now, working on our sixth week. Which means we are halfway through our three months already! How time goes by. And the days are slowly getting longer – it’s not like in where the days get much longer than nights, it’s only about an hour difference (I think). But the nights are warming up noticeably. I was wearing my socks to bed last month, now that is too hot! And we don’t need our winter coats any longer in the mornings when we meet the kids at the gate.

What we are also noticing is that the kids are settling into the routine of things here at the school. Even little Wili (we fondly call him the wildman), who used to turn the other way and run as fast as his little feet would take him at the mention of his name, now is fastest to the table and to eat lunch and snacks. After snack he follows the others to wash his plate and meet in the preschool. He’s only three and it took him some getting used to being away from his mom. His laugh is from the belly and he loves the little bicycles. He really enjoys being here now.

For Valentines Day, here in Guatemala called Dia del Amistad, the kids, teachers and volunteers each made a card for their "secret" friend. In the afternoon after lunch we each had a turn at receiving a card and giving our card to our secret friend. Afterward the playgrounds and zipline were open for all to enjoy.

In art class the older kids have completed a colour wheel and the gray scale. They quickly figured out how to mix orange, green and purple. They have had one class of using the gray scale to see light and shadow. When standing waiting at the sink to clean their brushes and pallets, some of them also learned that mixing all the colours made black and swampy greens and browns! It fills our hearts to see these kids each day and know that they run to get to their art classes.
