Week 2
We never tire of the view from anywhere here on the Project Somos finca. There are 8 volcanoes visible in the distance. The red glow from Fuego, the active one that has erupted twice this year, can sometimes be seen at night and heard rumbling. The finca is far enough away from any danger from it.
The sky at night lights up with a hundred million stars and the hillside village lights twinkle with their own glow. One realizes, from the energy of this land, all the love that has gone into the making of this village and that surrounds each child who attends here.
During week 2 the new kids settled in a little more, starting to know more of the ways of the classes and the structures. For instance, each “Little” knows to wear a hat outside of the class and to keep their water bottles full and close to them. They wash their dishes after snacks and their hands after using the ‘banyo’.
One Little had no idea what to do with paper and crayons the first week. She would make a few marks and then fold and crumple her paper. But the second week she drew, well, scribbled, on the paper and used many colours. Sam and I continue to change and modify all of our classes, as we too, settle in more and learn from the students what their needs are and how best to present new media to them.
